Defining Excellence: Refining Our National Judging Criteria

To maintain the highest standards at our national events, we must ensure our judging criteria remain objective, fair, and reflective of the diverse range of machinery within our community. This discussion is for certified judges and experienced collectors to debate and refine the scoring rubrics used at our shows. We are examining how we weigh different categories—such as mechanical function, cosmetic authenticity, safety compliance, and the historical documentation provided by the owner. Are our current judging sheets effectively highlighting the effort required for a “working” restoration versus a static show piece? We invite members to share their experiences from past rallies, pointing out where they feel the judging process was successful and where it might need adjustment to better reward attention to detail and historical accuracy. Your feedback is essential to keeping our competitions fair and ensuring that every competitor leaves with a better understanding of how they can improve their next project.
